Ever Wondered What It’s Like to Care for Alpacas?

Here’s a Sneak Peek!

At Iris Lodge Alpacas, every day is an adventure! From sunrise feedings to hands-on animal care, running an alpaca farm is both rewarding and full of surprises. Let’s take you behind the scenes of what a typical day looks like.

6:00 AM – The Farm Wakes Up

The day starts early with the morning rounds. The first priority? Checking on our alpacas, llamas, and sheep. We walk through the paddocks to make sure everyone is happy and healthy.

🚜 Fun Fact: Alpacas communicate with gentle hums, so we listen to their sounds to understand their mood!

7:30 AM – Breakfast Time for the Herd

Alpacas love their food! Each morning, they get a mix of fresh hay, grain, and mineral supplements. Since they are natural grazers, we also make sure they have access to lush pasture.

🐾 Did You Know? Alpacas don’t have top teeth in the front, so they nibble food with their lips instead!

10:00 AM – Visitor Experiences Begin

As guests start arriving for their Brunch with Alpacas or farm experiences, we prepare to welcome them. This means:

✔ Making sure the alpacas and llamas are well-fed and social.

✔ Setting up feeding stations.

✔ Prepping for farm tours and Q&A sessions.

Our Favorite Part? Seeing first-time visitors interact with alpacas—especially when they discover how soft their fleece is!

12:30 PM – Midday Check-in & Farm Maintenance

By lunchtime, we take a short break, but farm work never stops! The middle of the day includes:

  • Checking fences and shelters to ensure animal safety.

  • Cleaning feeding areas and water toughs to keep everything fresh and hygienic.

  • Caring for sick or older alpacas who may need extra attention.

🐑 Meet Our Oldest Alpaca! Gingers Mum is one of our senior alpacas, and she enjoys a quiet spot near the shelters where she can lounge in the sun.

3:00 PM – Alpaca Health Checks

Regular care is key to keeping alpacas happy. Every afternoon, we focus on health checks, which includes:

✔ Trimming hooves.

✔ Checking overall health.

✔ Brushing and maintaining their luxurious fleece.

🌿 Sustainability Note: All fleece from our alpacas is ethically harvested and repurposed!

5:00 PM – Evening Feed & Wind Down

As the sun sets, it’s time for the final feed and farm walk-through. Alpacas are naturally calm animals, so the farm settles into a peaceful rhythm.

6:30 PM – Wrapping Up the Day

With all the animals fed and tucked in, we finally relax. But farming never truly stops—if a baby alpaca (cria) is expected, we might be up for a late-night birth watch!

🐾 Fun Fact: Newborn alpacas weigh around 6-8 kg and can stand within an hour of birth!

The Best Part of Being an Alpaca Farmer?

✔ Seeing visitors fall in love with alpacas.✔ Watching baby alpacas grow and develop their own personalities.✔ Being surrounded by nature every day.
